Grip strength looks like a party trick and behaves like a vital sign. The PURE study, following nearly 140,000 adults across 17 countries and published in The Lancet, found that every 5kg decrement in grip strength carried a 16 percent higher all-cause mortality risk, and that grip predicted death more strongly than systolic blood pressure. 4. Body composition
The body-composition marker that answers the fitness-for-age question is not weight and not BMI. It reads out the state of your autonomic nervous system, how quickly the parasympathetic brake re-engages after the sympathetic accelerator lifts, and the evidence behind it is old, large and blunt. The Cleveland Clinic cohort published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a recovery of 12 beats or fewer in the first minute predicted sharply elevated mortality over six years, independent of fitness and cardiac history.
The benchmarks: 12 or fewer is the clinical warning line at any age. Around 15 to 20 is unremarkable. Above 20 is good, and well-trained adults of any decade routinely drop 25 to 35 beats in the minute. 6. Simple strength tests
Beyond grip, three no-equipment tests complete the strength picture, each with enough research behind it to take seriously.
The 30-second sit-to-stand: count full stands from a standard chair, arms crossed, in 30 seconds. It is the field standard for lower-body strength in older adults, and the practical bands are simple: mid-teens and above is healthy for adults in their 60s, with each decade younger expecting a few more; needing hands to rise at all, at any age, is a finding. The test doubles as a power marker when you attend to speed, and lower-body power is the capacity that falls prevention actually runs on.
Push-ups to failure, strict form: a marker of upper-body strength endurance with cohort evidence linking higher counts to lower cardiovascular event rates in working-age adults. Working bands: 20 or more is solid for men through midlife, 10 or more full push-ups for women, with knee variations scored separately and honestly.
The floor test, least formal and most telling: sit down on the floor and stand back up, using as little support as possible. Every hand, knee or wobble docks a point.
